Video Games / Anthem
« on: December 07, 2018, 09:34:14 AM »
I went against my better judgement last night.  After the 2018 Game Awards Show, I pre-ordered Anthem on both EA Origin and PlayStation 4. :-\

I haven't been in on the ground floor of a crap-show in a while.

Table-Top Games / Villains & Vigilantes 3.0
« on: March 10, 2017, 10:43:00 PM »
Jeff Dee and Jack Herman just released a pre-release PDF of the Villains & Vigilantes 3.0: Mighty Protectors RPG core rulebook today to all Kickstarter backers. It's basically the game with no art and an incomplete setting chapter.

I downloaded it and gave it a very quick look through. What I did see looks good.  Although I'm not entirely sure about the changing the name of the "Charisma" attribute to "Cool."

I am amused that the show has essentially turned into Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Hercules.

Movies and Television / Time After Time
« on: March 01, 2017, 09:50:06 PM »
The new television series based on the 1979 movie based off of the 1979 novel premieres this Sunday.

Not sure how they'll extend a two hour movie into a television series, but Time After Time was one of my favorite movies so I'll give it a shot.

Movies and Television / Doctor Strange
« on: February 28, 2017, 04:11:11 PM »
Doctor Strange just became available to rent, and I finally saw it last weekend.  It's very, very good, IMO.  It's tied for best Marvel film with Guardians of the Galaxy, IMO.  I'm a big fan of Benedict Cumberbatch's, but I didn't see the movie in the theater as I was afraid all of the vertical sequences and bending and twisting buildings would give me vertigo, like the 2012 Total Recall did.  Thankfully, that was not the case.  In other news, there's a new Honest Trailer:

Science and Technology / Amazon Down, Taking Comixology With It
« on: February 28, 2017, 04:07:27 PM »
Amazon is down on the east coast of North America, taking Comixology, Amazon Music, Amazon Prime Video, Signal, and a bunch of others offline with it.

The digital comics reading service comiXology is experiencing outages in both its mobile app and website. The outage is ongoing as confirmed by the company, and is part of a larger unresolved issue with its parent company Amazon's cloud infrastructure. Other services experience issues include Amazon Music, Amazon Prime Video, Medium, Slack, Trello, and Signal.

"We're seeing some errors on the app and website," tweeted comiXology. "Our tech team is digging into this right now. Sorry for the trouble!"

Amazon has acknowledged the outage, saying that it is affecting its S3 servers on the North American East Coast.

"We continue to experience high error rates with S3 in US-EAST-1, which is impacting various AWS services. We are working hard at repairing S3, believe we understand root cause, and are working on implementing what we believe will remediate the issue."

One of the few down sides to keeping my book, comic book, movie, and television show collections all digital.  If Comixology and/or VUDU ever go, I am royally screwed.

Video Games / Avatar Video Game by Ubisoft
« on: February 28, 2017, 03:18:42 PM »
In addition to four (yes, four), upcoming movie sequels, an Avatar video game is in development by Ubisoft developer Massive Entertainment.

You can add another video game to the list of things starring James Cameron’s spacesmurfs, as Ubisoft have announced one coming from their Massive studio – the mob behind Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment’s Tom Clancy’s The Division. Ubisoft already released a mediocre Avatar game alongside the first movie so hey, maybe they’ll make a good one this time.

All we know for certain is that Massive will build their yet-unnamed Avatar game [official site] in their own engine, Snowdrop. That’s the one they built The Division on. Beyond that, I’d broadly speculate that it involves some elements of running, jumping, shooting, and possibly flying. Call it a hunch.

I've never seen Avatar.  Am I missing much?  I understood that it was basically Dances with Wolves.... IN SPAAACE!.

In any case, the game should at least look pretty.

Video Games / The Secret World
« on: February 27, 2017, 03:25:24 PM »
Funcom plans to "relaunch" The Secret World MMOG over the next few months.

Funcom's fourth quarter 2016 financial report for investors landed this afternoon, and it's a doozy, especially for MMORPG players. Of most interest is the news that the studio is planning on a relaunch of The Secret World in the next few months, with a redesigned newbie experience, revamps to gameplay and combat, dailies, and a business model overhaul.

I have had a lifetime subscription to The Secret World since it launched.  It was fun and very well written, but the combat was difficult and by the time I reached the Egypt zone (which is or at least was notoriously difficult), everyone I played with at launch had quit and I found the zone impossible to play solo.

It may be time to re-download and re-install the game.

Wrestling / Lucha Underground
« on: February 26, 2017, 08:33:01 AM »
The first two seasons of Lucha Underground are coming to Netflix on Wednesday, March 15th.

Lucha Underground premiered back in October of 2014 on the EL Rey Network, and since it burst onto the scene, it has taken the professional wrestling world by storm. As more and more viewers began to follow along with the unique product, it garnered more and more attention from distributing outlets — streaming giant Netflix in particular. Recently it was announced that the promotion would be appearing on the most popular streaming service in the world, we just didn’t know exactly when.

Now we do know. The Netflix releases for March were recently announced, and on the list you can see that on March 15 you will be able to watch all the amazing Lucha Underground action from seasons 1 and 2. Season 3 is currently still ongoing, so there’s obviously no definitive date for when you’ll be able to catch up on the latest season.

With Lucha Underground appearing solely on El Rey to this point, while people have been flocking to it as they can, they haven’t really been able to reach a very broad audience. Obviously, things definitely change in that regard with Netflix now distributing their content. There are far more subscribers with the access to Netflix than there are to the El Rey Network, so this deal can ultimately end up going a long way with expanding the viewership and keeping the upstart promotion going for a long time.

I look forward to finally seeing it.

Independent Comics / ROM
« on: February 26, 2017, 07:27:29 AM »
Comixology held a "World of Hasbro" sale last week, so I picked up the rest of ROM's comic books from IDW's ROM reboot last year thus far.  It's an interesting modern take on ROM.

I remember reading the old Marvel ROM comic books in the early-to-mid 1980s.  In fact, I even had a subscription until the end.  I was excited that IDW was going to give him a reboot and relaunch... until Hasbro decided to tie in the new ROM with the other Hasbro comic books, (G.I. Joe, Transformers, Micronauts, Action Man, M.A.S.K., et al.).  I didn't want to be bogged down in all that other crap.  So I mostly held off until the Comixology sale last week and decided to give it a go.  I'm glad I did.

Other than ROM and the Dire Wraiths, most of what are in the books is new, including the supporting cast.  ROM himself now has actual fingers, and hails from Elonia, (no longer from Galador).  The two humans he meets and befriends are Darby Mason, a soldier (not active) suffering from PTSD whose family was wiped out by the Dire Wraiths, and Camilla Byers, a California police officer marked by the Dire Wraiths and whose partner was killed by them.

I just hope that ROM never crosses over with My Little Ponies.  :-\

Movies and Television / Star Trek: Discovery
« on: February 23, 2017, 05:13:19 PM »
Star Trek: Discovery has a new rumored estimated premiere date: "September-ish."

Recently, actor Doug Jones sat down with the Triumph & Disaster podcast to talk about his acting history, and of course the conversation turned to #StarTrekDiscovery. Jones plays Lt Saru on the new Star Trek show, a character who serves aboard the USS Discovery.

[...]Unfortunately, Jones wasn't allowed to reveal any more information about Star Trek: Discovery, but he did talk about when the show would air. While many fans were expecting to have to wait until late Fall to see the USS Discovery finally leave spacedock, according to Jones' calculations the show will air much earlier than we thought.

"It'll air... probably in the Fall. Maybe September-ish."

Video Games / Ship of Heroes
« on: February 22, 2017, 06:38:21 PM »
The fourth City of Heroes "spiritual successor" Ship of Heroes plans on launching its Kickstarter campaign in 40 days and fifteen hours from now, (which would be Tuesday, April 4th).

Whenever we here bring news about a new indie title, there's always at least one person asking in the comments about when the Kickstarter is starting. It's not even cynical at this point, just a predictable eventuality. Of course, usually the answer to that question is unclear, since most teams announce the Kickstarter date around the same time the Kickstarter actually starts. Ship of Heroes has opted instead to launch a Kickstarter countdown on its main page, so you can see exactly how long it will be before the game launches its Kickstarter project.

I really miss City of Heroes and I like the concept of Ship of Heroes.  A science-fiction super-hero MMOG with tabbed combat?  I'm in.  However, the Kickstarter ship has sailed IMO.  I fully expect their Kickstarter campaign to fail with flying colors.  If they attempted this back around 2013, it would probably do okie.  But people are more skeptical and wary of Kickstarter and Indiegogo these days.  Many video game Kickstarter campaigns last year failed, and the few that did succeed scraped by for the most part.  If any City of Heroes "spiritual successor" is going to succeed, it's going to be City of Titans IMO, and even that is a longshot.

DC Comics / Superman Reborn
« on: February 19, 2017, 07:09:05 AM »
I haven't anticipated a comic book this much since DC Rebirth #1.  It starts with Superman #18, coming out March 1st.  Not too much known yet. theorizes that the mystery of New 52 Superman and pre-Flashpoint Superman may point to Electric Superman, with New 52 Superman possibly being Electric Red Superman and pre-Flashpoint Superman being Electric Blue Superman.

In any case, I'm just glad that we'll see the new Superman costume with red boots and get to see a version of the Electric Red Superman costume with Superwoman.  :)  I couldn't stand Electric Superman, but the costume was very good.

Posting Rules

1. Play nice
When making a post on this message board, conduct yourself properly.  Proper conduct includes treating each other with respect.  Confront an opinion, rather than a person; personal attacks of any kind are not tolerated.  The posting of messages or materials that are abusive, discriminatory or threatening in nature, or designed to harass or intimidate another person are not tolerated.

We encourage lively debate about a number of topics, however when you object to a certain post to the point where you intend to attack the poster, contact the Moderators instead.  The post may also be objectionable to us, in which case a heated response will just get you in trouble as well.

If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact Moderators directly, or by using the "Report to Moderator" button available in any post.

2. No profanity in thread titles
While profanity in posts is fine, please do not use profanity in thread titles.

Note that discriminatory language, including racial slurs, and words that are derogatory of a particular ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation are always out of bounds.

3. No spoilers in thread titles
No matter the form of entertainment (books, comic books, films, television, etc.), please do not put information that spoils important or climatic content of the work in the title of threads.

4. Don't spoil entertainment
Please be mindful of your fellow Comic Books Chat members and do not spoil entertainment, (books, comic books, films, television, etc.).  We have spoiler BBC codes, use them.  For comic books, graphic novels, manga, and television shows please wait at least one week before spoiling without using the spoiler BBC codes.  For books and films, please wait at least one month before spoiling without using the spoiler BBC codes.

5. Don’t ignite flames
Politics and religion are topics not allowed for discussion on this board.

6. Put things where they belong
Please do not cross post.  Cross posting is defined as posting the same information in two or more locations.  The forum will work best when posts are organized in their appropriate forum and/or sub-forum.  If you’re having trouble deciding where a post goes, feel free to ask.  If you think there should be changes to forum structure, let us know that, too.

9. Be constructive
When you post, add something substantive to conversations (“funny” counts as “substantive”).  Please do not post without contributing to the forum, or the discussion at hand.  If your posts add nothing, you may be wasting people’s time and our resources.  Do not post here if your only intention is to be confrontational.  This includes behavior considered trolling by the Moderator/Administrator team.  Problem posts will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.  Naturally, the odd frivolous post won’t attract attention, but systematic behavior, picking fights, and thread hijacking will be addressed with warnings and bans as necessary.  Posts may be moved or deleted at the Moderator/Administrator’s discretion in these cases (see Rule 15).

10. The no-commerce clause
Do not offer to sell/trade anything on these forums.  Do not offer to buy/trade anything on these forums.

11. Credit where it’s due
If you post materials from other websites (including news sources), books and/or newsgroups credit should be given whenever possible.  Summaries of news articles are acceptable and preferred with links to the original article included.

12. Use images and video sparingly
Can the right image and/or video add that certain something to a post?  Yes!  Can images and/or video be overused?  A thousand times yes!  So think before you add an image and/or video and make sure it’s truly useful to whatever you’re trying to communicate.  Also, please don’t pirate images (see rule 13).

13. Don’t be a pirate
This message board will not be used for trading, obtaining, making available or selling of unauthorized or illegally obtained copyrighted materials.  Therefore it is strictly forbidden to post any link, make reference to, or mention the ability through any manner, the acquisition of or sharing of ANY copyrighted material obtained through unauthorized or illegal means, from any location be it on the Internet or not.  In addition, no more than three pages of any given comic book, graphic novel, or manga should be posted at any one time.
