Text Only Web Comics
« on: February 25, 2017, 06:22:01 AM »
I follow a few text only web comics at the moment. All super-hero related.

Super Powereds
The best of these is from "Drew Hayes Novels". The guy has a few books going on (like The Utterly Uninteresting and Unadventurous Tales of Fred, The Vampire Accountant) but most of his stuff is centred around his "Powereds" world. In this universe there are normal people, people with super powers and in-between there are the "powered". These poor individuals have super powers but lack any kind of control. If thier power is significant, then they can be a danger to themselves and anyone near them and so are often outcasts and are the bottom rung of society.

His main story centres on a small group of young "powereds" who through experimentation are mysteriously given control of their abilities and are sent to  at Lander University to participate in the Hero Certification Course. The story is designed as a book and has a definite end in sight, which I think we are getting near as the students are in their final year at the University.

Year 1 start here: http://www.drewhayesnovels.com/spy1index

There are also some decent parallel stories, that you might want to pick up at the right stage of the journey. First is "Corpies" which follows the once retired parent of one of the Powered students as he picks up his life working for a "Damage Control" type company.

Corpies start here: http://www.drewhayesnovels.com/corpiesindex/

And there is also a story centred on a student from the year below the cast of Powereds and a student from a sister university called "Blades & Barriers".

Blades & Barriers start here: http://www.drewhayesnovels.com/bbindex/

PS: Nothing in the above is unsuitable for a teenage reader imo. The leader character in Corpies is coming out as gay, and is trying to re-establish a relationship with his sons. Which is about as tough as the content gets.

World Domination in Retrospect
On the other end of the scale is the story of Psycho Gecko. This is very rude, full of swearing, sex and violance. The conceit behind the story is that Psycho Gecko is beaming his web log to us from a parallel universe via a dimensonal transmitter in his head.

Mildly amusing, one of the better villain stories imo but probably an acquired taste  ;D

Legion of Nothing
The story of Nick Klein. Super-heroics seems to have skipped a generation in his family but Nick's grandfather was the original Rocket, a powered armour hero from the 40s and leader of the original Grand Lake Heroes League. Naturally gifted with electronics (a super power?) Nick inherits his grandfather's armour and command centre and it seems that most of his friends are the children of other heroes and who would very much like to see the League reform.

Super Powereds has completed its story run so now is a good time to read it if you are interested in super hero stories.

It will come off the web eventually and get package up as an ebook.
